Photo tips for Golden Retrievers

Light coats are easy to overexpose. Bright midday sun can wash out the gold and lose the feathering, so shoot in open shade, on a cloudy day or beside a big window.

• Make sure light reaches the eyes. Dark eyes under a heavy brow can disappear in shadow.
• Brush the chest and ears first so the feathering looks full, not tangled.
• Goldens love to lean in. Step back a little and zoom so the whole head and chest fit in the frame.
• A tennis ball held above the camera gets that alert, happy look every time.
